Summer Vacation 2017

We started our vacation our vacation five days ago after our regular Thursday visit with my mom.  The first leg of the trip was to drive as far north as Gaylord.  We arrived in Gaylord close to 9:00pm.  We checked into the hotel and went next door to a restaurant and grabbed a snack.  We then went back to the room and settled in.

We took our time getting on the road Friday morning.  Our destination was Marquette and we decided to make a little detour.  Michelle had wanted to go to Petosky for a long time so we would stop there.  On the way we did a drive through Boyne Mountain.  I had not been to Boyne since I lasted raced there.  That has to be at least ten years.  It has grown and changed a lot in that time.

We reached Petosky and were trying to find a beach.  Michelle was on a quest to find Petosky stones.  We had never been to Petosky and I was very surprised at how big and busy it was.  It appeared that everything on the coast was private and developed.  We were heading out of town and toward Mackinaw City and decided to make one last try of finding a public beach.  That is when we stumbled upon this.
The trailhead had direct access to a beach.

On the beach Michelle and Brendan started their search. They did find Petosky stones as well as other stones.  It was worth the effort put into it.
Wild Flowers on the beach.

Nice view of the Bay!

Our next stop would be St. Ignace and we were running short on time.  As we approached the Mighty Mac we could see a storm over St. Ignace.

The Mighty Mac.

The Storm.

We went to B. C. Pizza as is tradition.  It was after 3:00pm and we missed the pizza buffet.  We ordered pizza and enjoyed our meal.  The plan was to climb Castle Rock next, however the storm had a different idea.  So it was off to Marquette.

The drive to Marquette was long and we checked into our hotel after 7:00pm.  The next stop would be Lakeview Arena to pick up my Ore 2 Shore race packet and take part in the spaghetti feed.  Coming in this late made quick work of getting the packet.  We went over to the spaghetti feed and got the last plate of spaghetti.

We stopped and seen Raymond and his family and finalized our plans for race morning.  Then we returned to our hotel and turned in for the night.

Next, Race Day!

Easter

Easter has come and gone.  It was a very busy couple of days.  We started out with Brendan getting very sick Wednesday night.  Luckily he was feeling better on Friday and we were able to enjoy the holiday.. Mom and Dad came out on Saturday.  We met them at Backwood's and had a late lunch.  We then came back to our house to color eggs and visit.     Mom's Work   Mom also brought this with her. This was my grandmother's Lutheran Hymnal.  It was given to her on her confirmation.  It is over 100 years old and in German.  Mom also has her bible.  She is giving this to Amelith Lutheran Church.   We all had a really good time and it was a full day.    On Sunday we went to church and then to Michelle's mom and dad's for a late lunch and the annual easter egg hunt.     The kids had fun as always.   We had a really good meal then Michelle and I took a 2+ mile walk...

Summer Vacation: Day 6

We had a light breakfast and Michelle and I had to do a quick shopping trip.  We returned and had baked ravioli, salad and garlic toast.  A very good meal to hold us on our road trip.   Our stop was the Fayette Historic Townsite. This was a mining town that was abandoned.  The State of Michigan bought the site and turned it into a State Park.  Some of the buildings have been restored and others have not.  Some work has been done to some so they can remain standing. The Smelting building. Slag is a waste product of the smelting process. Michelle has been finding a lot of slag on our trip.  It is called many things and is in demand by rock hunters and jewelry makers. We returned to the house and had sandwiches before departing for Escanaba.  We found a spot to fish, I spotted small beach for Michelle to look for rocks.  We caught a couple fish, nothing to really talk about.  Michelle and Kayla found a l...

Summer Vacation Day 4: The ER

Day four started out with beautiful weather.  We had breakfast and Michelle took Brendan fishing.  I decided I would take a ride on the bike and do a little recon for a family bike ride. I set off east to ride toward Rapid River.  I rode around the the edge of the bay and took a few pictures. Dunes on the edge of Gladstone. This was around 4-5 miles out of town in a small subdivision. The photo above is of a small river I crossed, unfortunately I cannot remember the name.  I thought I found a bike trail that would be nice for all of us.  Unfortunately it was swampy and not kept up.  I headed back to Gladstone and met Michelle and Brendan out on the fishing dock. I sat with them for a while and Brendan caught this. This is a Gobi.  An invasive species of the Great Lakes. After a few minutes I started back to the house.  On the way I started to have some chest pain.  After showering it had not let up. ...
