Ore to Shore Conclusions

The Race: This has become my favorite race!  I had not done the Soft Rock in about 4 years.  I had forgotten how fun this course is.  It is mostly downhill and very fast when you want it to be.  The downhills are incredible.  This year it was more like a ride to me than a race and I think this made it even better.  I seen a lot of things that I had not seen in the past because of the ride pace.  The best part was riding with Jay Jay and helping him to achieve his goal.  That was worth much more than any trophy!

After the Race: My back felt great and I did not feel to tired.  This would be do to the pace.  Jay Jay also said that he wants to do the race on the Fat Bike next year.  So the Green Machine will now become his primary ride.  He asked me today when we would do our next ride.  That will hopefully be tomorrow evening?  I will take pics of the Green Machine and review the build in a future post.

The Farley 6: The Farley was the perfect bike for this course.  The drive train is stock 2x10 Shimano, Deore Shifters, XT Shadow Rear derailleur and Xram XO front derailleur.  Brakes are Avid BB7.  The wheels are the stock Bontrager Hubs, SunRingle Mulefut rims.  Tires are Vee Mission in the rear and Vee Mission Command on the front with QTubes superlight 26x2.4-2.75 tubes and blue Surly rim strips.  The fork is Chinese Carbon with 135 spacing.  Bike weighs right around 28 pounds.  Not bad.

The only change that could make this bike better is a Bluto fork.  I believe I will be making this upgrade before next years race.  Will also require me to purchase a new front wheel unless someone makes adapters for the Bontrager Hub.  This will also add a couple pounds to the bike.

Whats Next?: We are thinking that we will ride Peak 2 Peak.  Michelle would like to go to Crystal Mountain and so would I.  Jay Jay said he will do the sport class race on the fat bike.  Let the fun begin.

I will post soon on the Green Machine build for Jay Jay and training plans.

Summer Vacation Day 4: The ER

Day four started out with beautiful weather.  We had breakfast and Michelle took Brendan fishing.  I decided I would take a ride on the bike and do a little recon for a family bike ride. I set off east to ride toward Rapid River.  I rode around the the edge of the bay and took a few pictures. Dunes on the edge of Gladstone. This was around 4-5 miles out of town in a small subdivision. The photo above is of a small river I crossed, unfortunately I cannot remember the name.  I thought I found a bike trail that would be nice for all of us.  Unfortunately it was swampy and not kept up.  I headed back to Gladstone and met Michelle and Brendan out on the fishing dock. I sat with them for a while and Brendan caught this. This is a Gobi.  An invasive species of the Great Lakes. After a few minutes I started back to the house.  On the way I started to have some chest pain.  After showering it had not let up. ...

As I said in my previous post I had purchased a few things and would be introducing and reviewing them here.  Up next are: Surly Rim Strips:  These rime strips are designed for 80mm rims.  They also make them for 65mm and 100mm rims. They come in several colors. These are red and will go on the wheels that I have on the Vortex.  They are light weight, easy to work with and very durable.  I have these in various colors on most of my fat bike wheels.   Topeak Joe Blow Fat Tire Pump:  Following is from the Topeak Website: JoeBlow™ Fat The first floor pump exclusively designed for low pressure fat tire bikes. Independence Day

Another busy weekend and celebration of our country's independence.  I got a short ride in on Friday morning.  We then were preparing for a wedding.  Barb and Steve, a couple at our church were getting married and the ceremony/reception would be at Dawn and Reuben's house.  Reuben performed the ceremony and I was asked to do the photography.  This worked out great as I had purchased a used Sony DSLR camera on eBay and got to test it out.  It was a very nice ceremony and celebration with our church family and friends.   You may kiss the bride!   We then stuck around and all of us went to the fireworks at the Clio Park to cap off the evening.  We got home late and went right to bed.   I slept in a bit on Saturday morning and got up to watch the start of the Tour de France.  It was a good stage with a sprint finish and a bad crash that took Mark Cavendish out of the race.  I then ventured out on a 23 mile ride o...
