Marquette Day 3

The weather started out on the down side Tuesday. I was feeling tired and took an early nap. When I got up I had breakfast and then we prepared for a day out. We went to Walmart, purchased fishing licenses for Jay Jay and I. We bought another fishing pole and went to Teal Lake. Just so happens that this is the start line for the Soft Rock. So I showed Jay Jay the role out start. We fished for a while and Brendan caught a small mouth bass. Jay Jay also caught a small fish. While we were fishing Michelle and Kayla went to a fruit market and Yooperland.

While they were out they discovered the Jasper Ridge Brewery. So we went to the brewery for supper. They have a very nice (big) menu and the food was good. I would recommend this if you are in the UP. Michelle had heard about Jaspilite prior to coming to the UP. It is a rare mineral/gem. So we did a little research and located Jasper Knob or Jasper Hill as it is called. Here is a description: A bald-topped hill within the city of Ishpeming composed entirely of jaspilite, or more properly, banded hematite and jasper. To visit the hill, follow the stone steps through the wall and woods opposite the homes on Hill Street, near the intersection of Hill and Jasper streets. We found the location and hiked to the top. It was really cool and a great view.

We left the hill and had to make another stop at Walmart and then we went home. It was a long day.

Easter

Easter has come and gone.  It was a very busy couple of days.  We started out with Brendan getting very sick Wednesday night.  Luckily he was feeling better on Friday and we were able to enjoy the holiday.. Mom and Dad came out on Saturday.  We met them at Backwood's and had a late lunch.  We then came back to our house to color eggs and visit.     Mom's Work   Mom also brought this with her. This was my grandmother's Lutheran Hymnal.  It was given to her on her confirmation.  It is over 100 years old and in German.  Mom also has her bible.  She is giving this to Amelith Lutheran Church.   We all had a really good time and it was a full day.    On Sunday we went to church and then to Michelle's mom and dad's for a late lunch and the annual easter egg hunt.     The kids had fun as always.   We had a really good meal then Michelle and I took a 2+ mile walk...

Summer Vacation: Day 6

We had a light breakfast and Michelle and I had to do a quick shopping trip.  We returned and had baked ravioli, salad and garlic toast.  A very good meal to hold us on our road trip.   Our stop was the Fayette Historic Townsite. This was a mining town that was abandoned.  The State of Michigan bought the site and turned it into a State Park.  Some of the buildings have been restored and others have not.  Some work has been done to some so they can remain standing. The Smelting building. Slag is a waste product of the smelting process. Michelle has been finding a lot of slag on our trip.  It is called many things and is in demand by rock hunters and jewelry makers. We returned to the house and had sandwiches before departing for Escanaba.  We found a spot to fish, I spotted small beach for Michelle to look for rocks.  We caught a couple fish, nothing to really talk about.  Michelle and Kayla found a l...

Summer Vacation Day 4: The ER

Day four started out with beautiful weather.  We had breakfast and Michelle took Brendan fishing.  I decided I would take a ride on the bike and do a little recon for a family bike ride. I set off east to ride toward Rapid River.  I rode around the the edge of the bay and took a few pictures. Dunes on the edge of Gladstone. This was around 4-5 miles out of town in a small subdivision. The photo above is of a small river I crossed, unfortunately I cannot remember the name.  I thought I found a bike trail that would be nice for all of us.  Unfortunately it was swampy and not kept up.  I headed back to Gladstone and met Michelle and Brendan out on the fishing dock. I sat with them for a while and Brendan caught this. This is a Gobi.  An invasive species of the Great Lakes. After a few minutes I started back to the house.  On the way I started to have some chest pain.  After showering it had not let up. ...
