Marquette Bound

I had Friday off, Michelle worked and started getting things ready for vacation. A few errands were run and then I prepped the van. The day was over before we knew it. On Saturday we packed and loaded the van for the trip. Even managed to get the lawn cut before dark. The only thing left to put in the van was us. Sunday morning came early with less than 6 hours of sleep for me. We managed to be loaded up and on the road at 7:45am. A quick stop at the ATM and we were on I-75 headed north. We drove as far as West Branch and stopped at Big Boy for breakfast. After filling up we were back on the road. The sky was getting cloudy and darker as we headed north. We were definitely headed into rain if not a storm. I had Michelle pull up the radar and I could see the heaviest stuff had passed already. Just north of Gaylord we came into the rain. There were a lot of branches down along I-75, definitely some high winds. We stopped briefly at the Indian River exit for a break and then were back on the road. As we approached the Mackinaw Bridge there were brake lights ahead of us. Traffic was really backed up and at a stand still.

Saw this car!

We would find out later that the bridge had been closed due to high winds. It took us over 45 minutes to get across the bridge. We made a brief stop at the rest area and then stopped for gas. We also had something to eat at McDonalds. When we left McDonalds traffic was backed up on US 2 3.5 miles to cross the bridge. We made the remaining drive with only one rest stop.

We arrived at the house around 4:45pm. It was a lot of time in the car. We got unpacked and the owner of the home gave us a walk through. We decompressed for a while and then Michelle, Brendan and I went into Marquette to get some groceries. We picked up pizza on the way back. After eating we went out to the beach for the sunset. I found that the battery in the camera was dead and took a few pics with the iPhone. We went inside, cleaned up and then went to bed. Good news is that my back felt good after all the time in the van. I will give it a little test on Monday by taking JJ for a ride.

Summer Vacation: Day 10, Heading Home.

Sunday would be a long day of travel as we would make the trek home in one day.  Still shorter than driving from Marquette. We had breakfast and started to pack up.  I had put the bikes on the van Saturday evening while the grill was heating up and loaded a few things up.  We managed to get on the around just a few minutes after 12:00pm.   Michelle would take the first leg of the drive at the wheel of the van and I would rest.  We made a stop at a rest area in Manistique and I took a few photos. A lighthouse for Michelle.  A mouse in a tuxedo! We got back on the road and stopped at another rest area.   Very cool! Brendan made a friend. The were not to bad. Our next stop would be St. Ignace.  We wanted to eat at Clyde's Drive In.  However, after arriving the place was packed.  So we went to B.C. Pizza again.  After lunch we made our way to Castle Rock as we were not able to climb it on o...

End of Summer

The Best Time to Bike! On Saturday I traveled with Raymond to the Bear Claw Epic.  This was the second annual race and the second time up there for Raymond and I.  We got there with plenty of time to spare and got ready to go. Farley ready to go. I registered for Beginner Fat Bike or at least I thought so?  I felt pretty good and knowing that I only had one lap to do I went all out.  I passed several riders through the race and felt I did pretty good.  This course has a lot of climbing and rewards you with some nice downhills. After I finished my race I put on a fresh shirt and went out on the course with the camera and my new lens.  I took over 400 pictures and headed back to the start finish after Raymond finished his race. Raymond on his second lap. And the final climb. The beginner awards were going on and they announced my name as first place for Beginner Men 50-59.  I was surprised, but did not protest.  Aft...
