Iceman: Slush Cup

So we made it to the campground with plenty of time to spare only to find that the gate was not open.  This is the second year in a row that it was not open on time.  We were told it would be open by 7am and it was not.  Fortunately we were one of the first in line and had enough time to get ready and make it to the start line with time to spare.  Oh yeah, it was snowing and would not let up till the afternoon.

Ready to go.

We took off and started making our way through the pack.  We were doing good and then we started to have some problems.  I heard a noise and the pedals on the bike started to hang up, Brendans pants got caught in the chainring.  I back pedaled a bit and they came out.  A short time later the sand and moisture started to cause problems with the gears.  We lost the chain a couple of times on climbs and the gears just did not want to work right.  But we stuck to our plan and crossed the finish line strong.  I could hear Michelle cheering for us when we got there.  Always a good thing to hear.  We caught up to her and she told me that she thought we got fourth place for the second year in a row.

A welcome sight to any racer.

I know that I am not in as food of shape as I was last year.  The conditions were also much different.  However, it still seemed like the course was more difficult.  We were 15 minutes slower than last year.  My legs are very sore this evening and I am very tired.  We did stay all day also and walked around a lot.

Waiting for the start (from left: Don Miller, Alexander Leach, Brendan and JJ)

Raymond Leach post race.

So we got something to eat and checked our results.  It was confirmed that we got 4th place.  Alexander also got 4th in his class.  So we got to take the podium.

 On the podium.

Frankie Andreau was the awards announcer and kind enough to take a photo.

Brendan then did the Sno Cone in the afternoon.  Alexander agreed to ride with him which was very nice.  Which resulted in Brendan's second medal of the day.

 Pre Sno Cone.

Heading to the finish and going strong.

Crossing the line.

We went back and packed up and then got a snack.  We just missed the pro men finish and heard that Sam Schultz (US Olympian) won in a sprint finish.  We decided to stick around for the finish of the women's race.

Georgia Gould Pro Women's winner.

So another Iceman is in the books and we are settled in for the night.  We make our trip back tomorrow.

Summer Vacation: Day 10, Heading Home.

Sunday would be a long day of travel as we would make the trek home in one day.  Still shorter than driving from Marquette. We had breakfast and started to pack up.  I had put the bikes on the van Saturday evening while the grill was heating up and loaded a few things up.  We managed to get on the around just a few minutes after 12:00pm.   Michelle would take the first leg of the drive at the wheel of the van and I would rest.  We made a stop at a rest area in Manistique and I took a few photos. A lighthouse for Michelle.  A mouse in a tuxedo! We got back on the road and stopped at another rest area.   Very cool! Brendan made a friend. The were not to bad. Our next stop would be St. Ignace.  We wanted to eat at Clyde's Drive In.  However, after arriving the place was packed.  So we went to B.C. Pizza again.  After lunch we made our way to Castle Rock as we were not able to climb it on o...

Mother's Day Part II

On Sunday we celebrated Mother's Day at Church followed by a buffet at the Whistle Stop in Clio.  It was a very good meal and fun for all.   The Bauer's     The Garcia's   The Cody's minus Tyler   Then we celebrated at our house with Michelle's family in the evening with another big feast.    Help Yourselves!   A good time was had by all and one of the best Mother's Day celebrations yet.  Happy Mother's Day, we love you all!

Happy Labor Day!

So we had another busy week leading up to Labor Day Weekend.  On Wednesday we had Brendan's open house for 4th Grade.  We did some shopping after and I sold my Giant OCR. Giant OCR Composite 3 I bought this bike in 2005.  I put some good miles on it over the years.  For about 6 years it had been in the basement on the trainer.  I had rebuilt it this summer and took it out a couple of times.  It just seemed to big now.  I guess I am a little older and less flexible.  I decided to put it up for sale as it just did not fit any longer.  I found a nice young man that was looking for a road bike and he really liked it.  It is going to a good home and will be out on the road where it belongs. The funds from this sale went toward the purchase of a front wheel to go on the Farley and will fit the Bluto.  That wheel should be in some time this week. On Saturday morning we did not have Brendan.  He stayed at mom's with ...
