July 4, 2015

We celebrated the 4th of July with Michelle's parents last night. We had dinner here and then fireworks in the driveway. We had a very nice time.  Now to step back a bit.

After returning from church camp we determined that Brendan needed a new bike.  He had outgrown his 24 inch Specialized Hot Rock.  We did a little shopping locally, however we did not find anything that we really liked.  We almost purchased a Diamondback Axis at Dick's.  We decided not to and made a stop at The Stable.  Seen a couple bikes that interested us, but just seemed a little to expensive. That evening I was on line and checked the Mongoose website.  They had bikes on clearance!  I purchased Brendan a Tyax Sport for half price.  It arrived on Thursday and Michelle and I unboxed it and started putting it together.  I finished the assembly Friday morning and then Brendan and I went out for a ride at the Shiawassee Refuge.

Ready to ride!

Parking lot test.

Riding partner.

We did the 3.8 mile loop.  It was very muddy in places and very overgrown.  They have not been taking care of the trail this year.  I don't think we will be riding there again.  Need to find a spot for Brendan to get his Ore to Shore training in.  After the ride we went and had lunch at Applebee's.

My plan is to race at Island Lake next Saturday to test my fitness for Ore to Shore.  Hoping JJ does not have to work.  Doubt he will get the day off.

Tonight we will head for Clio for the fireworks and then tomorrow we are bringing mom out here for the day.

All for now, have a great holiday!

End of Summer

The Best Time to Bike! On Saturday I traveled with Raymond to the Bear Claw Epic.  This was the second annual race and the second time up there for Raymond and I.  We got there with plenty of time to spare and got ready to go. Farley ready to go. I registered for Beginner Fat Bike or at least I thought so?  I felt pretty good and knowing that I only had one lap to do I went all out.  I passed several riders through the race and felt I did pretty good.  This course has a lot of climbing and rewards you with some nice downhills. After I finished my race I put on a fresh shirt and went out on the course with the camera and my new lens.  I took over 400 pictures and headed back to the start finish after Raymond finished his race. Raymond on his second lap. And the final climb. The beginner awards were going on and they announced my name as first place for Beginner Men 50-59.  I was surprised, but did not protest.  Aft...

Summer Vacation: Day 10, Heading Home.

Sunday would be a long day of travel as we would make the trek home in one day.  Still shorter than driving from Marquette. We had breakfast and started to pack up.  I had put the bikes on the van Saturday evening while the grill was heating up and loaded a few things up.  We managed to get on the around just a few minutes after 12:00pm.   Michelle would take the first leg of the drive at the wheel of the van and I would rest.  We made a stop at a rest area in Manistique and I took a few photos. A lighthouse for Michelle.  A mouse in a tuxedo! We got back on the road and stopped at another rest area.   Very cool! Brendan made a friend. The were not to bad. Our next stop would be St. Ignace.  We wanted to eat at Clyde's Drive In.  However, after arriving the place was packed.  So we went to B.C. Pizza again.  After lunch we made our way to Castle Rock as we were not able to climb it on o...
