Ore to Shore Update

Training had been going pretty much as planned up until this week.  Last Saturday I did a 20 mile ride and got caught out in a storm.  Just rain, no thunder or lightning.  It was a nice ride.  The day before I had worked 13 hours and my back was starting to hurt.  I felt good after the ride and took a nap.  By Monday my back was feeling pretty good and I decided to just rest one more day.

On Tuesday I was feeling good.  While at worked I coughed really hard and felt some severe pain in my back. That evening we went to Clio for hair cuts (Michelle and the boys, I do my own).  JJ and I rode home from Clio, he had not rode in a week.  He did good and I felt good on the bike.

Wednesday morning I was in a lot of pain and my back was really stiff.  I went to work and called my doctor after the office opened.  The doctor figured it was a muscle spasm and ordered x-rays to be safe.  The results came back and this is what they found.   Spondylolisthesis at L5-S1 with probable bilateral spondylolysis.  Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which one bone in your back (vertebra)
slides forward over the bone below it. It most often occurs in the lower spine.

It looks something like this except mine is in L5.  I don't have some of the more severe symptoms.  They also found a fracture in the vertebrae.  Doctor says that the fracture led to this.  Not sure when it happened.  Last x-rays of my back were done in 1997 and it was not there at that time.  Next step is physical therapy for core strength.  This will need to continue the rest of my life.  Not a bad thing.

I will try to get short ride in to test things out next week.  Still planning on riding the Soft Rock with JJ.  If anything this may slow me down a little.

We leave for Marquette next Sunday.  The race is on Saturday, August 8.

I will post soon with other updates as we move along here.

Summer Vacation Day 4: The ER

Day four started out with beautiful weather.  We had breakfast and Michelle took Brendan fishing.  I decided I would take a ride on the bike and do a little recon for a family bike ride. I set off east to ride toward Rapid River.  I rode around the the edge of the bay and took a few pictures. Dunes on the edge of Gladstone. This was around 4-5 miles out of town in a small subdivision. The photo above is of a small river I crossed, unfortunately I cannot remember the name.  I thought I found a bike trail that would be nice for all of us.  Unfortunately it was swampy and not kept up.  I headed back to Gladstone and met Michelle and Brendan out on the fishing dock. I sat with them for a while and Brendan caught this. This is a Gobi.  An invasive species of the Great Lakes. After a few minutes I started back to the house.  On the way I started to have some chest pain.  After showering it had not let up. ...

Independence Day

Another busy weekend and celebration of our country's independence.  I got a short ride in on Friday morning.  We then were preparing for a wedding.  Barb and Steve, a couple at our church were getting married and the ceremony/reception would be at Dawn and Reuben's house.  Reuben performed the ceremony and I was asked to do the photography.  This worked out great as I had purchased a used Sony DSLR camera on eBay and got to test it out.  It was a very nice ceremony and celebration with our church family and friends.   You may kiss the bride!   We then stuck around and all of us went to the fireworks at the Clio Park to cap off the evening.  We got home late and went right to bed.   I slept in a bit on Saturday morning and got up to watch the start of the Tour de France.  It was a good stage with a sprint finish and a bad crash that took Mark Cavendish out of the race.  I then ventured out on a 23 mile ride o...
