Vacation Day 2

I would like to introduce to you Brendan's traveling companions.  They will be accompanying us on this trip and other adventures.

Meet Giraffee, elephant (Ellie) and elephant (BJ).

Giraffee was bought for Brendan one time when he was sick.  The elephants were bought when dad was in the hospital.  Brendan wanted to get dad something and picked out the elephant for him.  Then he had to have the same thing.  The elephant stayed with dad to the end.  Mom then took him home until Saturday when we left.  She told Brendan that he could take him now. This made Brendan very happy.

We started out with a good breakfast and I took off on a 23.75 mile bike ride on the North Central State Trail.  The trail runs from Gaylord, MI to Mackinaw City, MI and is 62 miles long.  I rode from the campground to Cheboygan and back.  I missed my turn off for the campground and got a little extra ride.  JJ was supposed to join me but he did not get out of bed in time.

I had lunch after returning and then we headed to Mackinaw City for the 18th Century Rendezvous.

We then went down to the city beach and did a little exploring and relaxing.  Along with a great view of the bridge.

We then went for Ice Cream!  It was awesome.  We headed back to the cabin for a little rest and then did a little planning.  We went to Cheboygan and ate at Mulligans.  It was very good.  Made a stop at Walmart and headed back to the cabin for a campfire.  The kids made smore's and Michelle and I relaxed, something we rarely do.  The sky was clear and beautiful.

Easter

Easter has come and gone.  It was a very busy couple of days.  We started out with Brendan getting very sick Wednesday night.  Luckily he was feeling better on Friday and we were able to enjoy the holiday.. Mom and Dad came out on Saturday.  We met them at Backwood's and had a late lunch.  We then came back to our house to color eggs and visit.     Mom's Work   Mom also brought this with her. This was my grandmother's Lutheran Hymnal.  It was given to her on her confirmation.  It is over 100 years old and in German.  Mom also has her bible.  She is giving this to Amelith Lutheran Church.   We all had a really good time and it was a full day.    On Sunday we went to church and then to Michelle's mom and dad's for a late lunch and the annual easter egg hunt.     The kids had fun as always.   We had a really good meal then Michelle and I took a 2+ mile walk...

Summer Vacation: Day 6

We had a light breakfast and Michelle and I had to do a quick shopping trip.  We returned and had baked ravioli, salad and garlic toast.  A very good meal to hold us on our road trip.   Our stop was the Fayette Historic Townsite. This was a mining town that was abandoned.  The State of Michigan bought the site and turned it into a State Park.  Some of the buildings have been restored and others have not.  Some work has been done to some so they can remain standing. The Smelting building. Slag is a waste product of the smelting process. Michelle has been finding a lot of slag on our trip.  It is called many things and is in demand by rock hunters and jewelry makers. We returned to the house and had sandwiches before departing for Escanaba.  We found a spot to fish, I spotted small beach for Michelle to look for rocks.  We caught a couple fish, nothing to really talk about.  Michelle and Kayla found a l...

Summer Vacation Day 4: The ER

Day four started out with beautiful weather.  We had breakfast and Michelle took Brendan fishing.  I decided I would take a ride on the bike and do a little recon for a family bike ride. I set off east to ride toward Rapid River.  I rode around the the edge of the bay and took a few pictures. Dunes on the edge of Gladstone. This was around 4-5 miles out of town in a small subdivision. The photo above is of a small river I crossed, unfortunately I cannot remember the name.  I thought I found a bike trail that would be nice for all of us.  Unfortunately it was swampy and not kept up.  I headed back to Gladstone and met Michelle and Brendan out on the fishing dock. I sat with them for a while and Brendan caught this. This is a Gobi.  An invasive species of the Great Lakes. After a few minutes I started back to the house.  On the way I started to have some chest pain.  After showering it had not let up. ...
