Fat Bike Test Ride

So Sunday came around and after church, lunch and some chores I put on some bike gear and took the Fat Bike (dubbed: Green Machine) out for it's first ride.  I managed to make it out the icy driveway without crashing and to the road.  The tires had a little self steer but not as much as I had anticipated.  I had reversed the tire direction to see if I could get more traction on the tires for snow.  Snow tires will definitely be an upcoming investment (at least before the next winter sets in).  There was a strong wind coming out of the west and when I got to Burt Road with the wind at my back I made good time.  I arrived at the Taymouth Township Park which is only about a half mile from the house.  The main area of the park is closed, however my scouting on the way home from church told me that some of the parking lot had been plowed.  I rode around and found that snowmobiles had been all over the park.  So I went off road and started riding the snowmobile tracks.  Everything was very packed and hard from the snowmobiles and the recent thaw, rain and refreeze.  The bike handled really well in the snow and the tires surprised me.  Shifting and brakes worked flawlessly.  I had a hard time leaving the park I was having so much fun.  But I was running out of daylight.  So I headed home.  The end result was 49 minutes of riding and 5.5 miles.

Just nice to get outdoors and ride.

Next test for the bike will be this Sunday, March 2, 2014.  I talked JJ into doing the last Fat Bike Race of the season put on by Fun Promotions.  It is at Pando Winter Sports Park in Rockford, MI and we will be doing the team race.  I will report after the race.

Till then, stay warm!

Summer Vacation: Day 10, Heading Home.

Sunday would be a long day of travel as we would make the trek home in one day.  Still shorter than driving from Marquette. We had breakfast and started to pack up.  I had put the bikes on the van Saturday evening while the grill was heating up and loaded a few things up.  We managed to get on the around just a few minutes after 12:00pm.   Michelle would take the first leg of the drive at the wheel of the van and I would rest.  We made a stop at a rest area in Manistique and I took a few photos. A lighthouse for Michelle.  A mouse in a tuxedo! We got back on the road and stopped at another rest area.   Very cool! Brendan made a friend. The were not to bad. Our next stop would be St. Ignace.  We wanted to eat at Clyde's Drive In.  However, after arriving the place was packed.  So we went to B.C. Pizza again.  After lunch we made our way to Castle Rock as we were not able to climb it on o...

End of Summer

The Best Time to Bike! On Saturday I traveled with Raymond to the Bear Claw Epic.  This was the second annual race and the second time up there for Raymond and I.  We got there with plenty of time to spare and got ready to go. Farley ready to go. I registered for Beginner Fat Bike or at least I thought so?  I felt pretty good and knowing that I only had one lap to do I went all out.  I passed several riders through the race and felt I did pretty good.  This course has a lot of climbing and rewards you with some nice downhills. After I finished my race I put on a fresh shirt and went out on the course with the camera and my new lens.  I took over 400 pictures and headed back to the start finish after Raymond finished his race. Raymond on his second lap. And the final climb. The beginner awards were going on and they announced my name as first place for Beginner Men 50-59.  I was surprised, but did not protest.  Aft...
