Midland City Forest XC Race

Sunday was the mountain bike cross country race put on by Tailwind Racing.  Midland is not really my type of race course.  Tight, twisty and technical is the best way to describe it.  I woke up at a decent time on Sunday and felt rested.  I had done most of my prep for the race on Saturday night.

During the day Saturday was Scott's Graduation Party.  We had worked all day and I think the work and sun had taken a toll on me.

I got to the venue with plenty of time.  Picked up my registration packet and went out to the course.  I managed to take some photos of the expert and elite racers.  I then went and got ready for the race.

When I pulled the bike out of the van I discovered that the front tire had came off the rim in a small area.  I took care of that, got dressed and warmed up.   I got to the start line and was feeling good.  The start took us right up the sled hill and then into the trail.  After about a mile I fell into sixth place in my group and would stay there for the entire race.  I had a lot of fun racing the course and almost went down twice.  I clipped a tree with my handlebar and scratched my knuckles.  Then I clipped a stump with my pedal and managed to hold on.

This was the debut for the Green Machine and it proved to be a solid ride.  My goal was to do the race in 1 hour and 30 minutes, I finished in 1 hour and 32 minutes.

 Warm up total.

Green Machine post race!
I ran 10 pounds of pressure in the front tire and 12 in the rear. I will drop 2 pounds in both tires for Ore to Shore.  Other than that I will not change anything in the setup.  With three weeks to the race I feel that I am on track for a good race.

Summer Vacation Day 4: The ER

Day four started out with beautiful weather.  We had breakfast and Michelle took Brendan fishing.  I decided I would take a ride on the bike and do a little recon for a family bike ride. I set off east to ride toward Rapid River.  I rode around the the edge of the bay and took a few pictures. Dunes on the edge of Gladstone. This was around 4-5 miles out of town in a small subdivision. The photo above is of a small river I crossed, unfortunately I cannot remember the name.  I thought I found a bike trail that would be nice for all of us.  Unfortunately it was swampy and not kept up.  I headed back to Gladstone and met Michelle and Brendan out on the fishing dock. I sat with them for a while and Brendan caught this. This is a Gobi.  An invasive species of the Great Lakes. After a few minutes I started back to the house.  On the way I started to have some chest pain.  After showering it had not let up. ...

Independence Day

Another busy weekend and celebration of our country's independence.  I got a short ride in on Friday morning.  We then were preparing for a wedding.  Barb and Steve, a couple at our church were getting married and the ceremony/reception would be at Dawn and Reuben's house.  Reuben performed the ceremony and I was asked to do the photography.  This worked out great as I had purchased a used Sony DSLR camera on eBay and got to test it out.  It was a very nice ceremony and celebration with our church family and friends.   You may kiss the bride!   We then stuck around and all of us went to the fireworks at the Clio Park to cap off the evening.  We got home late and went right to bed.   I slept in a bit on Saturday morning and got up to watch the start of the Tour de France.  It was a good stage with a sprint finish and a bad crash that took Mark Cavendish out of the race.  I then ventured out on a 23 mile ride o...

As I said in my previous post I had purchased a few things and would be introducing and reviewing them here.  Up next are: Surly Rim Strips:  These rime strips are designed for 80mm rims.  They also make them for 65mm and 100mm rims. They come in several colors. These are red and will go on the wheels that I have on the Vortex.  They are light weight, easy to work with and very durable.  I have these in various colors on most of my fat bike wheels.   Topeak Joe Blow Fat Tire Pump:  Following is from the Topeak Website: JoeBlow™ Fat The first floor pump exclusively designed for low pressure fat tire bikes.
