Happy New Year

Hard to believe we are 14 days into 2014.  So a little behind on this post.  We had our annual New Years party with our biking friends.  The Stange's, Leach's, Garcia's, Mark and Ann all made it.  We had our fiesta feast which is a big hit, which meant plenty of left overs for New Years Day.

The Ladys

The Men

We all had a lot of fun for the New Year and all of us agreed that we need to do this in the summer so we can have a bike ride and a cook out.  Hopefully we can pull it off?

We then had some really cold temperatures and a snow storm.  It was some of the coldest weather we have had in many years and the biggest snow storm since 1998.  We had around 18 inches of snow.  This was again followed by some very cold temperatures.  Below zero at night and only single digits during the day.  With wind chill it was as low as 30 below.

Eventually it warmed up and we got some rain. Some of the snow melted and it has helped to clear some of the roads.  Just not clear enough to ride outside so I have been riding the trainer and have also started to do some weight lifting.  Michelle has been doing it with me!  We have also been working on a diet and it has been successful.

The kids made a snowman!

We did decide that we will not be doing Iceman this year.  It will be the first time that I have missed it since starting to participate in 2002.  I will return someday, but when I can do the full race and not the slush cup.  Time will tell if Brendan will enjoy riding as much as I do?

Hoping that I can do Barry-Roubaix again this year.  Hopefully that will work out.  If not maybe the Lowell 50 which is the following week.  I also have the LOHS Winter Race on the radar.  That is less than three weeks away, need to see how the weather is.

Next up will the the Michigan Bicycle Expo, formerly the MMBA EXPO.  See you after that .

Easter

Easter has come and gone.  It was a very busy couple of days.  We started out with Brendan getting very sick Wednesday night.  Luckily he was feeling better on Friday and we were able to enjoy the holiday.. Mom and Dad came out on Saturday.  We met them at Backwood's and had a late lunch.  We then came back to our house to color eggs and visit.     Mom's Work   Mom also brought this with her. This was my grandmother's Lutheran Hymnal.  It was given to her on her confirmation.  It is over 100 years old and in German.  Mom also has her bible.  She is giving this to Amelith Lutheran Church.   We all had a really good time and it was a full day.    On Sunday we went to church and then to Michelle's mom and dad's for a late lunch and the annual easter egg hunt.     The kids had fun as always.   We had a really good meal then Michelle and I took a 2+ mile walk...

Independence Day

Another busy weekend and celebration of our country's independence.  I got a short ride in on Friday morning.  We then were preparing for a wedding.  Barb and Steve, a couple at our church were getting married and the ceremony/reception would be at Dawn and Reuben's house.  Reuben performed the ceremony and I was asked to do the photography.  This worked out great as I had purchased a used Sony DSLR camera on eBay and got to test it out.  It was a very nice ceremony and celebration with our church family and friends.   You may kiss the bride!   We then stuck around and all of us went to the fireworks at the Clio Park to cap off the evening.  We got home late and went right to bed.   I slept in a bit on Saturday morning and got up to watch the start of the Tour de France.  It was a good stage with a sprint finish and a bad crash that took Mark Cavendish out of the race.  I then ventured out on a 23 mile ride o...

Summer Vacation: Day 6

We had a light breakfast and Michelle and I had to do a quick shopping trip.  We returned and had baked ravioli, salad and garlic toast.  A very good meal to hold us on our road trip.   Our stop was the Fayette Historic Townsite. This was a mining town that was abandoned.  The State of Michigan bought the site and turned it into a State Park.  Some of the buildings have been restored and others have not.  Some work has been done to some so they can remain standing. The Smelting building. Slag is a waste product of the smelting process. Michelle has been finding a lot of slag on our trip.  It is called many things and is in demand by rock hunters and jewelry makers. We returned to the house and had sandwiches before departing for Escanaba.  We found a spot to fish, I spotted small beach for Michelle to look for rocks.  We caught a couple fish, nothing to really talk about.  Michelle and Kayla found a l...
