All Things Bike

Tomorrow is the Michigan Bicycle EXPO, formerly the Michigan Mountain Bike EXPO.  I have all my stuff together and ready to go.  I have my price list set and tables reserved.  JJ and I will be meeting Raymond and Alexander in Birch Run.  Then off to Michigan State University.  I will post tomorrow on how it went.

If I sell enough at the EXPO I will be buying my Fat Bike next week.  I have it narrowed down to a Motobecane through BikesDirect or a Framed from the House Outdoor Gear.  The Motobecane is a little less and the Framed comes with an extra set of wheels.  The Framed also has 170 rear spacing which is a plus.  How much I make tomorrow will determine what I get.

The other day someone that works with my wife stopped me and asked me if I was interested in an old road bike he had hanging in his garage.  The answer obviously was yes!  He brought it in the  next day and I loaded it in the van.

Panasonic road bike.

The bike was made by Panasonic in the 80's and featured some of Shimano's first indexed shifting.  I am not sure exactly what year it is, but it is in very good shape!  The only things not original on it are the seat and tires.  I will be tearing into it soon and this will be my bad weather Gravel Bike.  I will update when I start working on it.

I also have an old Schwinn setting in the basement that my brother in law gave me.  It needs a lot of work and will be a long term project.  This one will need to be sandblasted and painted.  Which will be nice as I am going to receive and air compressor that belonged to my wife's grandfather.

Training is going good.  Michelle and I have been on the trainers 3-4 days a week and also doing some weight training.  I was hoping to do the Lake Orion High School winter race next week, but I think the weather we are having will keep me inside.  If I get my Fat Bike in time I may get to do one of the last Fat Bike races and my big target for the spring will be the Lowell 50 Gravel race.  I will more than likely do the 34 mile race.  Plenty of time to figure that one out.

Time to get on the trainer!

Easter

Easter has come and gone.  It was a very busy couple of days.  We started out with Brendan getting very sick Wednesday night.  Luckily he was feeling better on Friday and we were able to enjoy the holiday.. Mom and Dad came out on Saturday.  We met them at Backwood's and had a late lunch.  We then came back to our house to color eggs and visit.     Mom's Work   Mom also brought this with her. This was my grandmother's Lutheran Hymnal.  It was given to her on her confirmation.  It is over 100 years old and in German.  Mom also has her bible.  She is giving this to Amelith Lutheran Church.   We all had a really good time and it was a full day.    On Sunday we went to church and then to Michelle's mom and dad's for a late lunch and the annual easter egg hunt.     The kids had fun as always.   We had a really good meal then Michelle and I took a 2+ mile walk...

Summer Vacation: Day 6

We had a light breakfast and Michelle and I had to do a quick shopping trip.  We returned and had baked ravioli, salad and garlic toast.  A very good meal to hold us on our road trip.   Our stop was the Fayette Historic Townsite. This was a mining town that was abandoned.  The State of Michigan bought the site and turned it into a State Park.  Some of the buildings have been restored and others have not.  Some work has been done to some so they can remain standing. The Smelting building. Slag is a waste product of the smelting process. Michelle has been finding a lot of slag on our trip.  It is called many things and is in demand by rock hunters and jewelry makers. We returned to the house and had sandwiches before departing for Escanaba.  We found a spot to fish, I spotted small beach for Michelle to look for rocks.  We caught a couple fish, nothing to really talk about.  Michelle and Kayla found a l...

Summer Vacation Day 4: The ER

Day four started out with beautiful weather.  We had breakfast and Michelle took Brendan fishing.  I decided I would take a ride on the bike and do a little recon for a family bike ride. I set off east to ride toward Rapid River.  I rode around the the edge of the bay and took a few pictures. Dunes on the edge of Gladstone. This was around 4-5 miles out of town in a small subdivision. The photo above is of a small river I crossed, unfortunately I cannot remember the name.  I thought I found a bike trail that would be nice for all of us.  Unfortunately it was swampy and not kept up.  I headed back to Gladstone and met Michelle and Brendan out on the fishing dock. I sat with them for a while and Brendan caught this. This is a Gobi.  An invasive species of the Great Lakes. After a few minutes I started back to the house.  On the way I started to have some chest pain.  After showering it had not let up. ...
