The Race: Peak 2 Peak

So I got to the start line in time this year.  There was light rain this year for the entire race.  We started and I felt good from the start.  Once over the initial climb it is very fast and I was spinning out and unable to keep up.  This put me a little back in the pack, but not to bad.  About 2.5 miles in several of us got stuck behind three slower riders in the single track.  When we finally got in an area we could pass it put us a ways behind the leaders.  I pushed hard and definitely made the right tire choice.  Things got hard in the last 1.5 miles as you come up the back of Crystal Mountain.  I had to dismount several times on the climbs.  I finally got in the last stretch and flew down the downhill.  I made the bend for the grass climb to the finish.  I passed three riders in this section.  Michelle was there at the end cheering me on!

It is over.

I really enjoyed the race and was glad I rode the single speed.  I really like the set up and am pleased with the steel frame.  I will never get rid of this bike.  So we went inside and and I checked the computer for my time.  I finished 8th in Beginner Men 40-49.  Very happy with a top 10 finish.

Next and last race of the season will be Iceman.

Easter

Easter has come and gone.  It was a very busy couple of days.  We started out with Brendan getting very sick Wednesday night.  Luckily he was feeling better on Friday and we were able to enjoy the holiday.. Mom and Dad came out on Saturday.  We met them at Backwood's and had a late lunch.  We then came back to our house to color eggs and visit.     Mom's Work   Mom also brought this with her. This was my grandmother's Lutheran Hymnal.  It was given to her on her confirmation.  It is over 100 years old and in German.  Mom also has her bible.  She is giving this to Amelith Lutheran Church.   We all had a really good time and it was a full day.    On Sunday we went to church and then to Michelle's mom and dad's for a late lunch and the annual easter egg hunt.     The kids had fun as always.   We had a really good meal then Michelle and I took a 2+ mile walk...

Summer Vacation: Day 6

We had a light breakfast and Michelle and I had to do a quick shopping trip.  We returned and had baked ravioli, salad and garlic toast.  A very good meal to hold us on our road trip.   Our stop was the Fayette Historic Townsite. This was a mining town that was abandoned.  The State of Michigan bought the site and turned it into a State Park.  Some of the buildings have been restored and others have not.  Some work has been done to some so they can remain standing. The Smelting building. Slag is a waste product of the smelting process. Michelle has been finding a lot of slag on our trip.  It is called many things and is in demand by rock hunters and jewelry makers. We returned to the house and had sandwiches before departing for Escanaba.  We found a spot to fish, I spotted small beach for Michelle to look for rocks.  We caught a couple fish, nothing to really talk about.  Michelle and Kayla found a l...

Summer Vacation Day 4: The ER

Day four started out with beautiful weather.  We had breakfast and Michelle took Brendan fishing.  I decided I would take a ride on the bike and do a little recon for a family bike ride. I set off east to ride toward Rapid River.  I rode around the the edge of the bay and took a few pictures. Dunes on the edge of Gladstone. This was around 4-5 miles out of town in a small subdivision. The photo above is of a small river I crossed, unfortunately I cannot remember the name.  I thought I found a bike trail that would be nice for all of us.  Unfortunately it was swampy and not kept up.  I headed back to Gladstone and met Michelle and Brendan out on the fishing dock. I sat with them for a while and Brendan caught this. This is a Gobi.  An invasive species of the Great Lakes. After a few minutes I started back to the house.  On the way I started to have some chest pain.  After showering it had not let up. ...
