A Fun Fall Day

I woke up Saturday morning early as always with a full day planned already.  I started a fire in the wood burner and woke JJ up.  He had to be at the high school by 7:40am.  Got breakfast going and I got him to the school.  The Marching Band was heading to Central Michigan University for Band Day.  This was an all day event for them culminating with the band performing on the field with the CMU band at halftime of the game.

I got back home and Michelle and I did some work and then we bundled up Brendan and I took him out on the tandem for our last ride together before Iceman.  Iceman is Saturday, November 3.  It looks like 4 of the top 5 tandems will be returning to the Slush Cup.  Should be a good race.

After the ride one of Brendan's friends invited him over for the afternoon.  Michelle dropped him off and then we headed for CMU.  We arrived at the stadium got parked and headed in.  We rented stadium seats (best $5 you can spend) and settled in.

The bands on the field.

A little girl was chosen from the tailgaters present to retrieve the CMU kickers tee after each kick off.  They do this at every home game.  Had to be really fun for her.  She did a great job.

JJ really had a good time.  He was going to ride home with us but decided to take the bus back.  This was a great experience for the kids.  Thank you to CMU for doing this for them.

We have a busy week ahead in preparation for Iceman.  Check back for updates leading up to the weekend.

Easter

Easter has come and gone.  It was a very busy couple of days.  We started out with Brendan getting very sick Wednesday night.  Luckily he was feeling better on Friday and we were able to enjoy the holiday.. Mom and Dad came out on Saturday.  We met them at Backwood's and had a late lunch.  We then came back to our house to color eggs and visit.     Mom's Work   Mom also brought this with her. This was my grandmother's Lutheran Hymnal.  It was given to her on her confirmation.  It is over 100 years old and in German.  Mom also has her bible.  She is giving this to Amelith Lutheran Church.   We all had a really good time and it was a full day.    On Sunday we went to church and then to Michelle's mom and dad's for a late lunch and the annual easter egg hunt.     The kids had fun as always.   We had a really good meal then Michelle and I took a 2+ mile walk...

Summer Vacation: Day 6

We had a light breakfast and Michelle and I had to do a quick shopping trip.  We returned and had baked ravioli, salad and garlic toast.  A very good meal to hold us on our road trip.   Our stop was the Fayette Historic Townsite. This was a mining town that was abandoned.  The State of Michigan bought the site and turned it into a State Park.  Some of the buildings have been restored and others have not.  Some work has been done to some so they can remain standing. The Smelting building. Slag is a waste product of the smelting process. Michelle has been finding a lot of slag on our trip.  It is called many things and is in demand by rock hunters and jewelry makers. We returned to the house and had sandwiches before departing for Escanaba.  We found a spot to fish, I spotted small beach for Michelle to look for rocks.  We caught a couple fish, nothing to really talk about.  Michelle and Kayla found a l...

Summer Vacation Day 4: The ER

Day four started out with beautiful weather.  We had breakfast and Michelle took Brendan fishing.  I decided I would take a ride on the bike and do a little recon for a family bike ride. I set off east to ride toward Rapid River.  I rode around the the edge of the bay and took a few pictures. Dunes on the edge of Gladstone. This was around 4-5 miles out of town in a small subdivision. The photo above is of a small river I crossed, unfortunately I cannot remember the name.  I thought I found a bike trail that would be nice for all of us.  Unfortunately it was swampy and not kept up.  I headed back to Gladstone and met Michelle and Brendan out on the fishing dock. I sat with them for a while and Brendan caught this. This is a Gobi.  An invasive species of the Great Lakes. After a few minutes I started back to the house.  On the way I started to have some chest pain.  After showering it had not let up. ...
