The Winter Bike

My Redline Monocog Flight

As promised yesterday I am posting on the winter bike I built.  I bought this frame set last year and it served as a single speed mountain bike with drop bars until this winter.  I then transformed it into this geared bike for the winter.  I had all the parts I needed for this build except for the shifters.

Non drive side of bike.

The frame is a 17 inch which is a little small for this application.  As mentioned before I bought it to be run as a drop bar/monster cross type bike and it will be run as that again after winter.  By running a slightly longer stem it fits fine and handles quickly due to the smaller size.  The rest of the specs are:
Sunrace M53 8 speed rear shifter
Shimano Deore long cage rear derailleur
Sram 8 speed cassette
Truvativ Firex SS crank with 38 tooth ring
MRP chainguide
Shimano chain
WTB FX28 rims with no name 6 bolt disc hubs
Specialized Fast Track tires
Niner flat bar
Easton EA70 stem
Ergon grips
Bontrager seatpost
Bontrager Saddle
Avid BB5 disc brakes
Avid FR5 levers

I may still change to multiple gears up front.  But for the moment I will keep it as is.

I purchased the Sunrace shifters as a low cost alternative and they work well.  They operate like Sram trigger shifters which are my preference.  They shift smoothly, however the levers are somewhat odd.

The large paddle shifts into the larger or easier gears while the small paddle shifts down to the smaller or harder gears.  The placement of the small paddle puts it close to the mounting hardware of the brake levers.  This was odd at first, however once I got the location down is was not an issue.  This may not be true with other brake levers.  The shifts were smooth and crisp.  In all a good bargain for the set at $25.00.

Come spring I will decide what configuration this bike will take.  Will it be a single speed, 1x8 or other?  All I know is it will be having drop bars again.

Easter

Easter has come and gone.  It was a very busy couple of days.  We started out with Brendan getting very sick Wednesday night.  Luckily he was feeling better on Friday and we were able to enjoy the holiday.. Mom and Dad came out on Saturday.  We met them at Backwood's and had a late lunch.  We then came back to our house to color eggs and visit.     Mom's Work   Mom also brought this with her. This was my grandmother's Lutheran Hymnal.  It was given to her on her confirmation.  It is over 100 years old and in German.  Mom also has her bible.  She is giving this to Amelith Lutheran Church.   We all had a really good time and it was a full day.    On Sunday we went to church and then to Michelle's mom and dad's for a late lunch and the annual easter egg hunt.     The kids had fun as always.   We had a really good meal then Michelle and I took a 2+ mile walk...

Summer Vacation: Day 6

We had a light breakfast and Michelle and I had to do a quick shopping trip.  We returned and had baked ravioli, salad and garlic toast.  A very good meal to hold us on our road trip.   Our stop was the Fayette Historic Townsite. This was a mining town that was abandoned.  The State of Michigan bought the site and turned it into a State Park.  Some of the buildings have been restored and others have not.  Some work has been done to some so they can remain standing. The Smelting building. Slag is a waste product of the smelting process. Michelle has been finding a lot of slag on our trip.  It is called many things and is in demand by rock hunters and jewelry makers. We returned to the house and had sandwiches before departing for Escanaba.  We found a spot to fish, I spotted small beach for Michelle to look for rocks.  We caught a couple fish, nothing to really talk about.  Michelle and Kayla found a l...

Summer Vacation Day 4: The ER

Day four started out with beautiful weather.  We had breakfast and Michelle took Brendan fishing.  I decided I would take a ride on the bike and do a little recon for a family bike ride. I set off east to ride toward Rapid River.  I rode around the the edge of the bay and took a few pictures. Dunes on the edge of Gladstone. This was around 4-5 miles out of town in a small subdivision. The photo above is of a small river I crossed, unfortunately I cannot remember the name.  I thought I found a bike trail that would be nice for all of us.  Unfortunately it was swampy and not kept up.  I headed back to Gladstone and met Michelle and Brendan out on the fishing dock. I sat with them for a while and Brendan caught this. This is a Gobi.  An invasive species of the Great Lakes. After a few minutes I started back to the house.  On the way I started to have some chest pain.  After showering it had not let up. ...
