Peak 2 Peak

So we are a week out from Peak 2 Peak at Crystal Mountain. A great time was had by all.

We left town around 1:30pm on Friday afternoon and got to Crystal right around 5pm.  We checked into our room and moved our stuff in.  We had one of the Wintergreen Condos for the weekend.  It was really nice!  Plenty of room for everyone.  I changed clothes and headed out for a little ride.  The course was not completely marked and I ended up heading back on the wrong trail. Kind of gave up on the pre-ride.  Ended up with 11 plus miles.  It was a great evening ride.  We ordered pizza and I got showered.  Michelle and I went and picked up the pizza and a few things at the gas station store.  The pizza was good and then we put in a movie to end the evening.

I was the first up in the morning and got coffee going and had a little breakfast.  While the others were getting moving I got JJ's and my bike ready for the race.  I prepped the bottles for the race and then JJ and I headed out for a little warm up.  When we got to the line I looked at the competition and decided that I was not going to contend for the top 5.  So I made the decision to make sure that JJ made it to the finish.  Shortly after the start I could tell JJ was going to struggle.  Three quarters of the way into the race JJ was starting to cramp.  He did decide to climb the back of the mountain and finished his first lap.  There would be no second lap for us.

It was back to the room to clean up and eat.  I then headed out to get some photos of the Elite Racers.  Michelle would join me and we went to the top of the mountain to see the leaders come through.

Jordan Wakeley and Cole House battle for position.

While on top of the mountain I ran into an old friend.  Clark Hogan was up from Ohio to ride Peak 2 Peak.  I had not seen Clark since 2007.  We raced against each other in the MMBA and Tailwind series races back then.  He was doing well and it was nice to catch up!

Michelle and I then went back down to the base of the mountain and I waited for the finish of the pro race.

Wakeley easily takes the win.

The fall colors were incredible.

After the race finished we took Brendan to the petting zoo and did some fun things.

Michelle and Brendan bundled up for the cold!

Kayla joined us at the petting zoo and we did the Crystal Coaster.  We then headed back to the room.  I stayed and started to watch the Michigan/Michigan State game and Michelle and Brendan went to the adventure park so Brendan could climb the rock wall.  After that we went to the Thistle Pub and Grill for dinner.  We got a couple of servings of Rock Steak so the kids could experience it.  They really enjoyed it and we had a nice dinner.  It was then back to the room.  Michelle and Brendan would go to the haunted woods.  That did not go so well.  They got back and we put in another movie before going to bed.

Conclusions: This was the 10th anniversary of Peak 2 Peak, one of the reasons that I wanted to be there.  I had attended the very first one.  It is really cool to see such a nice race grow the way it has.  I like this more than Iceman.  We probably won't be going back next year.  I would like to go back for the 15th anniversary.  Even if it is just to take pictures.  Next year if we go back we will probably go the week after the race and take an extra day or two and just enjoy the resort and some riding.

Stay tuned for some posts on the iCam test and updates on what has been done with the Farley.

Summer Vacation: Day 10, Heading Home.

Sunday would be a long day of travel as we would make the trek home in one day.  Still shorter than driving from Marquette. We had breakfast and started to pack up.  I had put the bikes on the van Saturday evening while the grill was heating up and loaded a few things up.  We managed to get on the around just a few minutes after 12:00pm.   Michelle would take the first leg of the drive at the wheel of the van and I would rest.  We made a stop at a rest area in Manistique and I took a few photos. A lighthouse for Michelle.  A mouse in a tuxedo! We got back on the road and stopped at another rest area.   Very cool! Brendan made a friend. The were not to bad. Our next stop would be St. Ignace.  We wanted to eat at Clyde's Drive In.  However, after arriving the place was packed.  So we went to B.C. Pizza again.  After lunch we made our way to Castle Rock as we were not able to climb it on o...

Independence Day

Another busy weekend and celebration of our country's independence.  I got a short ride in on Friday morning.  We then were preparing for a wedding.  Barb and Steve, a couple at our church were getting married and the ceremony/reception would be at Dawn and Reuben's house.  Reuben performed the ceremony and I was asked to do the photography.  This worked out great as I had purchased a used Sony DSLR camera on eBay and got to test it out.  It was a very nice ceremony and celebration with our church family and friends.   You may kiss the bride!   We then stuck around and all of us went to the fireworks at the Clio Park to cap off the evening.  We got home late and went right to bed.   I slept in a bit on Saturday morning and got up to watch the start of the Tour de France.  It was a good stage with a sprint finish and a bad crash that took Mark Cavendish out of the race.  I then ventured out on a 23 mile ride o...

Brendan's Last Birthday Party

So today we had another party for Brendan's Birthday.  We also celebrated MacKenzie's birthday today (hers was yesterday).  We had Michelle's parents here also.  This was about the 6th birthday celebration for Brendan.  Michelle made some really cool cakes for the two of them.   Brendan's Turtle Cake     Mackenzie's Owl Cake   Everyone arrived and we had a great meal and watched the Michigan/Michigan State game.  Very close game with Michigan pulling out the win in the last seconds.  There was cake and ice cream and the traditional Happy Birthday song.
