Global Fat Bike Day

Today was Global Fat Bike Day.  Having a Fat Bike required me to participate in the ride that was organized at Sleepy Hollow State Park.

Raymond arrived at our house at 9:00am.  We loaded his bike, gear and headed for our destination.  We arrived with plenty of time and prepped for the ride.

Raymond's Specialized Fat Boy

The Green Machine

There was a total of 17 riders.  15 on Fat Bikes.  Here is a sampling of some of the bikes.

Surly Krampus 29+

There  were others there that I did not get photos of.  A very good mix of all the manufacturers.  Before departing for the ride a group photo was taken.

The ride group.

We started out at a nice pace and the trail was leaf covered and tacky in places.  As we got farther back into the trail it was wet and greasy in spots.  The pace picked up and I  settled in for the ride.  The trail was what I would call very family friendly with a few technical sections.  We finished back at the picnic area for hot dogs, brats and snacks.  A very good time with some great people!  Hopefully it will take place again next year.

I am still not so sure about a 1x10 drivetrain for me?  With the crank I have on the bike I don't think that I can get a low enough gear for snow riding.  At points today I was struggling with the 30x40 combo.  Short of going Sram 1x11 I am not sure this will work.  The other concern is the Snowpack fork.  I really like the fork, however the shorter length may not be what I need.  I want to ride it in snow before I make a final decision.

So the only thing left is to clean the bike up. It got pretty dirty today.  Stay tuned.

Summer Vacation: Day 10, Heading Home.

Sunday would be a long day of travel as we would make the trek home in one day.  Still shorter than driving from Marquette. We had breakfast and started to pack up.  I had put the bikes on the van Saturday evening while the grill was heating up and loaded a few things up.  We managed to get on the around just a few minutes after 12:00pm.   Michelle would take the first leg of the drive at the wheel of the van and I would rest.  We made a stop at a rest area in Manistique and I took a few photos. A lighthouse for Michelle.  A mouse in a tuxedo! We got back on the road and stopped at another rest area.   Very cool! Brendan made a friend. The were not to bad. Our next stop would be St. Ignace.  We wanted to eat at Clyde's Drive In.  However, after arriving the place was packed.  So we went to B.C. Pizza again.  After lunch we made our way to Castle Rock as we were not able to climb it on o...

End of Summer

The Best Time to Bike! On Saturday I traveled with Raymond to the Bear Claw Epic.  This was the second annual race and the second time up there for Raymond and I.  We got there with plenty of time to spare and got ready to go. Farley ready to go. I registered for Beginner Fat Bike or at least I thought so?  I felt pretty good and knowing that I only had one lap to do I went all out.  I passed several riders through the race and felt I did pretty good.  This course has a lot of climbing and rewards you with some nice downhills. After I finished my race I put on a fresh shirt and went out on the course with the camera and my new lens.  I took over 400 pictures and headed back to the start finish after Raymond finished his race. Raymond on his second lap. And the final climb. The beginner awards were going on and they announced my name as first place for Beginner Men 50-59.  I was surprised, but did not protest.  Aft...
