Junior Rock

So the boys were doing the Junior Rock at Ore to Shore again.  We got there with plenty of time to spare and got them ready.  This would be the third time they were doing this race.
Ready to go!

So we did a little more up and the boys got to the starting line.  There were only 3 boys in JJ's class and 52 boys in Brendan's class.

JJ's at the start line.

So the race started and the boys were doing well.  JJ started several minutes ahead of Brendan and I.  So I did not know how he did until after we finished.  Brendan started out great but got hit by another rider about 100 yards into the race and he crashed hard.  It took him a while to recover, but he did and started to pick up the pace again.  Around the halfway point he ran into the back of another riders bike and crashed again.  He went down hard and was really dirty after this one.  It took him over a mile to snap out of it and he started to ride hard again.  He finished really strong.  I was very proud of him that he finished, he wanted to quit.

So we met Michelle and JJ at the finish.  JJ was really happy and felt he did well.  Michelle and everyone else thought he finished 4th.  JJ and I went to the van and started to load things up while Michelle and Brendan went to get some snacks and drinks.  When they returned Michelle handed me JJ's results.  He got third place and would be on the podium.  We were very excited for him.

So we celebrated that evening at Red Lobster and then returned to the Holiday Inn.  We spent some time with the Leach's and retired to our room.  It was a long day and we were all very tired.

So we headed out Sunday morning, leaving Marquette behind and headed for home.  We stopped in Munising and ate at Johnny Dog's.  This place was awesome!  They serve giant hot dogs with all kinds of toppings.  The fries come with different toppings also. We had chili cheese fries and piggy fries (topped with cheese and pulled pork).  If you are ever in Munising you need to check this out.  We made other stops on the way home and rolled in around 8:00pm.

So vacation was over and we were happy to be home.

Easter

Easter has come and gone.  It was a very busy couple of days.  We started out with Brendan getting very sick Wednesday night.  Luckily he was feeling better on Friday and we were able to enjoy the holiday.. Mom and Dad came out on Saturday.  We met them at Backwood's and had a late lunch.  We then came back to our house to color eggs and visit.     Mom's Work   Mom also brought this with her. This was my grandmother's Lutheran Hymnal.  It was given to her on her confirmation.  It is over 100 years old and in German.  Mom also has her bible.  She is giving this to Amelith Lutheran Church.   We all had a really good time and it was a full day.    On Sunday we went to church and then to Michelle's mom and dad's for a late lunch and the annual easter egg hunt.     The kids had fun as always.   We had a really good meal then Michelle and I took a 2+ mile walk...

Summer Vacation: Day 6

We had a light breakfast and Michelle and I had to do a quick shopping trip.  We returned and had baked ravioli, salad and garlic toast.  A very good meal to hold us on our road trip.   Our stop was the Fayette Historic Townsite. This was a mining town that was abandoned.  The State of Michigan bought the site and turned it into a State Park.  Some of the buildings have been restored and others have not.  Some work has been done to some so they can remain standing. The Smelting building. Slag is a waste product of the smelting process. Michelle has been finding a lot of slag on our trip.  It is called many things and is in demand by rock hunters and jewelry makers. We returned to the house and had sandwiches before departing for Escanaba.  We found a spot to fish, I spotted small beach for Michelle to look for rocks.  We caught a couple fish, nothing to really talk about.  Michelle and Kayla found a l...

Summer Vacation Day 4: The ER

Day four started out with beautiful weather.  We had breakfast and Michelle took Brendan fishing.  I decided I would take a ride on the bike and do a little recon for a family bike ride. I set off east to ride toward Rapid River.  I rode around the the edge of the bay and took a few pictures. Dunes on the edge of Gladstone. This was around 4-5 miles out of town in a small subdivision. The photo above is of a small river I crossed, unfortunately I cannot remember the name.  I thought I found a bike trail that would be nice for all of us.  Unfortunately it was swampy and not kept up.  I headed back to Gladstone and met Michelle and Brendan out on the fishing dock. I sat with them for a while and Brendan caught this. This is a Gobi.  An invasive species of the Great Lakes. After a few minutes I started back to the house.  On the way I started to have some chest pain.  After showering it had not let up. ...
