December Update

So Christmas is almost here.  Things have been very busy here since Thanksgiving.  Many things going on at work and with the family.  Several Christmas parties and other things.  JJ's concert was cancelled and their Christmas vacation started two days early.  Craziness from what happened in Connecticut last week.  Our thoughts and prayers have been with those families.

I have not been on the bikes since the day before Thanksgiving.  Will start a training routing on New Years.  I would like to do the Barry-Roubaix in March.  I did the inaugural race and have not been back since.  I really enjoy gravel road riding and this race is really growing into something special.  It sold out in 9 days and then the promoter announced that they will finish the race in downtown Hastings and kept registration open.  This could become the biggest race in the state!  Good luck to Rick and his team, they do great work.

Almost all the presents are wrapped now.  Brendan is really excited.  JJ came down with a cold.  He should be feeling better by Christmas.  My parents plan on coming out, we will do brunch with them.  I love cooking breakfast.  They really enjoy it and the boys mean so much to them.

There were also some difficult times.  My birth father passed away the other week.  We did not really have  relationship.  I new him more as a cousin that I seen occasionally.  My mom took it really hard.  His mother (mom's sister) passed away when he was 5.  Mom was only a teenager and helped her parents raise him.  When my dad and mom married he was a young man and dad also helped him a lot.  Mom said she felt like she lost her first son.  He was 68.  His health was not good for many for many years and recently he had started dialysis.

Well I guess that brings things up to speed and I will post up after Christmas.

My Dad

My last post was from Michelle and my anniversary celebration.  The day after we returned I received a call from my mom.  My dad was not doing well and needed to go to the hospital.  Michelle and I went to their house and we all took dad to the emergency room.  We had known for some time that he had Pulmonary Fibrosis for which there is no cure.  He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit later that day.  This would turn out to be his final journey. While in the Intensive Care Unit he received outstanding care from the staff at Covenant HealthCare.  Their compassionate care can not be equaled anywhere.  Dad's personality and belief in his creator also helped the staff and us through this difficult time.  During this time Dad was more concerned about us than himself.  He knew that soon he would meet Jesus face to face.  That was his comfort.  I made a promise to him that I would take care of mom and my family, just as he had c...

Summer Vacation Day 4: The ER

Day four started out with beautiful weather.  We had breakfast and Michelle took Brendan fishing.  I decided I would take a ride on the bike and do a little recon for a family bike ride. I set off east to ride toward Rapid River.  I rode around the the edge of the bay and took a few pictures. Dunes on the edge of Gladstone. This was around 4-5 miles out of town in a small subdivision. The photo above is of a small river I crossed, unfortunately I cannot remember the name.  I thought I found a bike trail that would be nice for all of us.  Unfortunately it was swampy and not kept up.  I headed back to Gladstone and met Michelle and Brendan out on the fishing dock. I sat with them for a while and Brendan caught this. This is a Gobi.  An invasive species of the Great Lakes. After a few minutes I started back to the house.  On the way I started to have some chest pain.  After showering it had not let up. ...

Summer Vacation: Day 8, Marquette

Day out started out cool, cloudy and windy.  It would stay like that the entire day.  After Michelle got up we took a little walk in the park by the bay.  It was very cool and returned to the house.  The plan for the day was to go to Marquette to visit Raymond and his family and have dinner with them. I received a text from Raymond that informed me the weather was not good there and it had not been for the entire week.  It had been very cold and windy.  He told me to bring warm clothes and we would probably be inside. We arrived at there location just after 3:00pm and it was cold and windy.  They told us it had been worse earlier in the day.  After talking for a while Angel started to make burgers and hot dogs on the grill.  We walked down to the beach with Raymond to discover that the beach was not really there.  The water has been so high this year and the waves were coming in so hard there was no beach.  They said they h...
