Day 2, Destiny Marquette

We woke up around 8:00am at the Holiday Inn in St Igance and headed down to the breakfast bar.  Very nice breakfast, anything you could ask for they had.  Very good coffee too!  After loading up on breakfast and stopping for gas (surprising that gas is nearly the same here in the UP as back home) we departed St Ignace around 12:00pm.  We headed west on Highway 2 then north on 117.  We had planned on stopping for Pasties at some point.  However, we had packed a great deal of food and snacks so we decided to just have them and made a stop shortly after turning west on to Highway 28.
Road Side park on 28, our first stop.
So we started to make sandwiches and stretch our legs.  There was another family there and to our surprise they were the ones that JJ played soccer with the night before in St Ignace.
So they played soccer!
They are from Minneapolis and were on the final leg of a trip around Lake Superior.  Their next stay would also be in Marquette.  Maybe we will run into them again.

So we were off and to our next stop.
Michelle and Brendan holding up the sign.
It is not Niagra Falls, but we still feel like Newlyweds!
We were then off to our next stop and discovered a possible Mountain Bike destination for next year.  It is in the Hiawatha National Forest called the Valley Spur trail.  We arrived at the Laughing Whitefish Waterfalls after a short drive.
At the trailhead.

What we found after a half mile hike.
Looking down the falls.
Playing in the stream.
So we left the falls behind and made our way to the Holiday Inn at Marquette.  We quickly unloaded and headed to meet our friends the Leach Family where they were staying on Highway 28 along the Lake Superior shore.  We had a great meal and then headed over to the beach.
Surfs up!
The kids had a great time plaing in the waves, they were around 3 foot.  We had a great evening with our friends and the kids all enjoyed each others company.  We left them around 11:00pm and headed back to the Inn.  Just a great day!  Well it is getting late and we have another big day ahead of us.  We plan on meeting our friends to take the kids for a preview of their race Saturday and some light trail riding.

Summer Vacation Day 4: The ER

Day four started out with beautiful weather.  We had breakfast and Michelle took Brendan fishing.  I decided I would take a ride on the bike and do a little recon for a family bike ride. I set off east to ride toward Rapid River.  I rode around the the edge of the bay and took a few pictures. Dunes on the edge of Gladstone. This was around 4-5 miles out of town in a small subdivision. The photo above is of a small river I crossed, unfortunately I cannot remember the name.  I thought I found a bike trail that would be nice for all of us.  Unfortunately it was swampy and not kept up.  I headed back to Gladstone and met Michelle and Brendan out on the fishing dock. I sat with them for a while and Brendan caught this. This is a Gobi.  An invasive species of the Great Lakes. After a few minutes I started back to the house.  On the way I started to have some chest pain.  After showering it had not let up. ...

Independence Day

Another busy weekend and celebration of our country's independence.  I got a short ride in on Friday morning.  We then were preparing for a wedding.  Barb and Steve, a couple at our church were getting married and the ceremony/reception would be at Dawn and Reuben's house.  Reuben performed the ceremony and I was asked to do the photography.  This worked out great as I had purchased a used Sony DSLR camera on eBay and got to test it out.  It was a very nice ceremony and celebration with our church family and friends.   You may kiss the bride!   We then stuck around and all of us went to the fireworks at the Clio Park to cap off the evening.  We got home late and went right to bed.   I slept in a bit on Saturday morning and got up to watch the start of the Tour de France.  It was a good stage with a sprint finish and a bad crash that took Mark Cavendish out of the race.  I then ventured out on a 23 mile ride o...

They come in several colors. These are red and will go on the wheels that I have on the Vortex.  They are light weight, easy to work with and very durable.  I have these in various colors on most of my fat bike wheels.   Topeak Joe Blow Fat Tire Pump:  Following is from the Topeak Website: JoeBlow™ Fat The first floor pump exclusively designed for low pressure fat tire bikes.
